I come from a galaxy far, far away. (Quote from the beginning of the original Star Wars movie)
I will boldly go where no man has gone before (Quote from the original Star Trek TV series)
How do I plan to get there?
By getting beamed up by Transporter (Also from the original Star Trek)
How am I like my parents?
Maybe I'm just like my father — too bold.
Maybe I'm just like my mother. She's never satisfied.
(Quote from the song "When Doves Cry" by Prince. Released in 1984, the same year my first child was born, which made me think a lot about the ways that I was like my father and mother. The video is rather "racy," as my grandmother used to say, so watch with caution....)
How am I UNLIKE my parents?
Let me count the ways! (An allusion to a famous poem that I thought Shakespeare wrote: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...." As it turns out, Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote it! It's Sonnet 43 of her Sonnets from the Portuguese)
Have you developed your own expectations for yourself?
This took me a lot longer than I thought it would. After my father died, I was split: part of me thought, "Thank goodness —now I can do what I want." The other part thought, "To honor my father's memory, I will be a good provider for my family, just like he was."
To take this a little farther, for much of my professional life, if I wanted to BE a good provider for my family, I had to meet the expectations of my superiors, for it was THEY who determined whether I would get the promotions and raises I needed to keep up with the cost of living....
Now, I balance my overlords' expectations with my own expectations, and most of the time, we reach a happy medium.
Gloria Steinem serves as a model of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility. Peter Matthiessen has always served as a role model of a writer who pursues his subjects with great passion and integrity.

What upsets me?
Remorseless tyrants and despots who prey on the weak and vulnerable, and don't know how to apologize. Ever.

I have been following the work done by Jeff Sikich, Santa Monica Mountains National Park Service mountain lion biologist, for decades. The work he does, tranquilizing mountain lions to provide routine health checkups and also taking blood samples to further his research, is filled with bravery and compassion and a true love for his subjects. He's definitely a hero of mine.
When I was a kid we lived in a subdivision in the San Fernando Valley that had been orange groves less than 10 years before we moved in. Our street was planted with liquidambar or "sweetgum" trees, which produce these hard, spiky seed pods, bigger than marbles but smaller than golf balls.
We used to collect these pods, hop on our bikes and hurl them at each other. Our bikes were those sweet Sixties "Stingray" bikes, with banana seats and raised handlebars.

Hi Professor! I really appreciate your your comment about expectations. I like how you found a happy medium between fulfilling the needs and requirements of others and living for yourself. Life is all about balance!
ReplyDeleteHi Professor Hansen!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your visuals and videos to watch. It personalizes the blog and makes it enjoyable to read! Also, I relate to your example involving the liquidambar trees in a funny way...we had a bunch of them planted in my yard as a kid, and I distinctively remember the name because I heard my dad say it often, probably as he was tending to the yard! Sort of silly...but interesting connection!
Looking forward to an awesome class.

Hey professor Hansen! That's really cool that you feel a special connection to mountain lions. Any specific incident or experience that made you feel this way?
ReplyDeleteGood question, James! I limit myself to three answers.
Delete1. I'm interested in knowing what is indigenous to a place. Though European Americans killed the indigenous grizzly bears of L.A. County, the mountain lion remains as alpha predator, limited now to two bands in the Santa Monica Mountains Wilderness on either side of the 101 at the LA/Ventura County Line.
2. After I heard about a mountain lion who crossed the 101, then the 405 to establish his territory in Griffith Park, I became a big fan -- wildlife scientists have named him P22.
3. A few years ago I wrote a fantasy/sci-fi novel about a group of shamans from Santa Barbara who were shapeshifters -- they could turn into animals. My favorite shapeshifter was Tukem (Chumash for "mountain lion") and his sidekick Yuxnuc (Chumash for "hummingbird").
Hey Professor,
ReplyDeleteI really like the Star Trek references, even though I think Captain Picard's Enterprise is light-years better than the original.
I too rode a banana seat bike growing up in South Central Los Angeles, but we called them low rider bikes. I miss that bike.
I am looking forward to this class!

Hi Professor Hansen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing the fun read to get to know you better. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to lose a parent at such a young age. I find your courage and desire to support your family inspiring.
Mountain lions are beautiful creatures, and I enjoyed watching all the footage you shared with us. Just last week, there was a mountain lion wandering in my neighborhood in Utah. Now, everyone is on watch to make sure they stay safe!
I am very excited for the semester! Thanks for a great Week 1.
Hey professor, I've never really gotten deep into Sci-Fi stuff, but I think using that as a medium through which you express character is really cool.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'd say I most closely identify as a bald eagle, when I was a kid I had a fascination with cats and leopards (so pretty close to mountain lions) and I love seeing them in the wild (and pictures of them on social media, especially cubs).
Thank you for an awesome week 1 and I look forward to next week!
Hey Professor Hansen! I loved your comment to James' question, I often have trouble mustering the courage to drive down 101, much less cross it as a four-legged feline like P22! Also, I lived in the Bay Area too, and my friends and I used to viciously pelt those "sweetgum" pods at each other, although we had no idea what kind of tree it was (no cool bikes though).
ReplyDeleteHey Professor! I love how you emphasis balance in your life, that is so important! There should be balance in all aspects of our lives. Looking forward for the rest of the semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Professor Hansen. I really liked the way that you answered the questions with quotes and videos. It made this fun to read. I am looking forward to the rest of the semester and have enjoyed it so far!

DeleteI think it is really cool how you incorporated different mediums of media into each of your responses and were very creative with it. I was very excited when I opened this, as I am a huge star wars fan.
ReplyDeleteHi Professor!
ReplyDeleteI have been working around some technical issues; however, I've been meaning to say that I see many similarities in our taste. I love your Star Wars and Star Trek references. Both of those series were integral in my childhood. I also enjoyed your Prince reference. He's definitely one of my favorite guitarists/artists of all time. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed your post. I hope this actually posts.
Hi Professor Hansen! Thank you for sharing this with us. I really enjoyed all the pop culture references. I find it very refreshing to read blurbs written with honest, vulnerable, and humorous elements like this one. Very Sag rising. Mountain Lions are beautiful animals.
